A Saturday lunch date saw me at a new restaurant: ‘Sprout’ located on Duxton Road. When my friend and I initially made plans, we both wanted somewhere where we could eat clean and healthy food (read: not laden with sugar and/or deep fried). If you live in Singapore you’ll understand what I mean, as finding somewhere where you can do this is surprisingly difficult… My friend recommended Sprout as it was somewhere she was looking to try out and it fit the bill.
Located just off Duxton Hill, it’s a casual café and hugely hipster. Whilst it initially looks like a small space that will barely fit 10, it opens up to a fairly large restaurant! The menu is extensive with a range of bagels, waffles, salads, main dishes and lots of drinks choices. They even have a DIY salad option which is always a good idea if the fixed dishes don't tickle your fancy.
I opted for the beef and broccoli bowl (middle picture below), but asked for no quinoa (I’m not a fan. Crazy, I know). The waitress was very proactive, and asked me if I wanted to replace it with something else (I opted for spinach). Now, my experience dining in Singapore has taught me that often if you ask waiting staff to go off piste, they basically have a mental shut down. They just Can. Not. Cope. So, to not only have this as an option, but to actually be asked, well: *mind blown*.
My friend opted for a Sprout Super Salad (first picture below), which was a vegetarian super food salad and one of their cold pressed juices (third picture below). At SG$18.90 per salad, if I wasn’t already used to the hefty prices attached to eating well in Singapore, I would have probably thought the price way too high… However, since I am used to it, prices were probably around what I would expect. I guess it’s just one of those things that if you want to eat good produce here, you have to pay up.
Nonetheless, the food was delicious, you could tell the ingredients were fresh and the salads were freshly prepared. The egg on my beef and broccoli was perfectly poached and overall presentation was clean and simple, just like the ingredients, I suppose!
The owner (I assumed) had a rather colourful name: ‘Poo’ (I didn’t want to ask), and was extremely attentive to all the customers. She came over a few times to ask if the food and everything was generally ok. Service in Singapore can sometimes be a little hit-or-miss so this friendly service was definitely welcome!
I also wanted to point out the bathroom (go with it, I have a point), which was basically equipped for someone to move in. They had pretty much anything you would need in there to primp yourself before / after your meal, including ACTUAL TOOTH FLOSS. You’ll know what I mean, if you’ve ever been in the situation where you’ve got something gross stuck in your teeth, and a tooth pick just won’t cut it (be honest, you all know what I mean!)… Unfortunately the bathroom lighting wasn't great so my photo didn't really come out, but it's just all the more reason for you to go check it out and see for yourself!
Overall, the food was definitely on point: we got our clean and healthy menu as desired, service was great with staff being really friendly and the atmosphere was perfect for a relaxed Saturday brunch (bonus points since there were no crying children!). I would definitely recommend Sprout if you are looking for somewhere new to try out!
